Press Release 27-11-2006
As the landmark event, the Seven Party Alliance (SPA) government and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) signed the much-awaited comprehensive peace accord, making an end to the decade long armed conflict in Nepal. The signing cerremony was held at the Birendra International Convention Centre (BICC) on November 21, 2006. The accord was signed by Prime Minister Mr. Girija Prasad Koirala and Chairman of the CPN (Maoist) Mr. Prachanda on behlaf of the SPA and the CPN (Maoist) respectively. Highlights of the newly signed peace accord include: - Formal end of the Maoists' People's War that began in 1996 - No political rights to King; his property to be nationalised underv public trusts - Implementation of all previous agreements reached betweenv the government and Maoists. - Maoists' People's Liberation Army and Nepalv Army and their arms to be managed as per the earlier agreement reached between the government and the CPN (Maoist). - No attacks or any kind of violent andv offensive activities from either side; no new recruitments in armed forces of both sides. - OHCHR-Nepal to monitor human rights situation, and UN Team tov monitor and supervise PLA cantonments and Nepal Army barracks - Fullv commitment to upholding human rights, all international human rights laws, civil liberties. - Maoists' parallel administration (People's governments, People's Courts) across the country to be scrapped. - National Peace andv Rehabilitation Commission, Truth Commission, and a high-level Commission for State Restructuring to be formed. - Feudal land-ownership system to end,v Scientific land distribution system to be adopted. - Strong punitive policy against corruption. - Property earned illegally by anybody throughv corruption to be confiscated. - Possession, display and use of arms andv weapons by anybody a punishable crime. - Both government and Maoists tov assist each other to maintain law peace, law and order. - Respectful rehabilitation and social integration of the people displaced during the insurgency. Meanwhile, the UN, US, India and others have welcomed the announcement of the comprehensive peace accord. The slacked economic sector, especially tourism, is expected to revive with the formal ending of the internal conflict.

Trekking Agents Association of Nepal (TAAN) has welcomed the historic Comprehensive Peace Accord signed by the government of the Seven Party Alliance and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). The landmark political development has marked the end of the decade-long internal conflict, a press release signed by the President of TAAN, Mr. Narendra B.C. states. It is important that all the major political parties, including the CPN (Maoist), have shown their strong commitment to work towards restoring peace and stability and accelerating the almost stalled economic development process in Nepal. TAAN, an umbrella organisation of the country's registered trekking agencies, has hoped that the signing of the peace agreement would reinstate Nepal's image as a safe and peaceful tourist destination in the international arena. The end of the conflict would also be helpful in promoting the country's vast and unique tourism resources. At this important hour, we would like to call upon all the tourism-related organisations, including Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC), to come up with more effective promotional programmes to give a desired boost to the Nepalese tourism industry. TAAN is always ready to move ahead hand in hand with all the concerned organisations for tourism promotion, the press release says.

Oktober 2006
1 beklimming Island Peak is 100% gelukt. Alle teamleden zijn doorgedrongen tot de top, melde ons Jagat gisteren om 14hr, 19 oktober. Iedereen nog steeds in goede conditie en op weg naar een yaksteak in Namche Bazar !

De beklimming van de Chulu Far East en Pisang Peak zijn 1 dag uitgesteld (19 oktober) wegens het slechte weer. Voorspellingen zeggen een verbetering in 2 dagen te voorzien, zodat een toppoging kan ondernomen worden. Ook hier stelt iedereen het goed en is er veel leute in Pisang/Manang. Ook hier wensen we de klimmers een goede bestijging en vooral een behouden thuiskomst ! Het gerstennat zal klaarstaan in Kathmandu !

Niet minder dan 2 extra groepen mountainbiken tussen Lhasa en Kathmandu. 1100km avontuur in ware expeditiestijl ! Een Belgisch en een Russisch Team bevinden zich momenteel in acclimatisatiefase in Lhasa. We wensen hun een goede reis toe !

22-08-2006 : Nieuws vanuit Lhasa : nieuwe groep voor Lhasa - Kathmandu
Een nieuwe groep is goed aangekomen in Lhasa en is bezig met de broodnodige acclimatisatie. Dit gebeurt door rustig wat te mountainbiken en het grote culturele aanbod van Lhasa te verkennen. De groep vertrekt binnen een aantal dagen op hun mountainbike-expeditie !

De Luxemburgse groep is volledig klaar en geacclimatiseerd voor vertrek vanuit Lhasa. Na inspirerende bezoeken aan diverse kloosters is nu iedereen 100% gemotiveerd om de eerste pedaalslagen te ondernemen !

Vandaag is Lila Bahadur vertrokken met een 16-koppige mountainbikegroep voor de 1100km lange Lhasa naar Kathmandu mountainbiketocht.

21-07-2006 : Vertrek Russische groep naar Mt Kailash
Onder leiding van Jagat gaat een Russische groep op zoek naar Mt Kailash via een alternatieve route. Het wordt een testproject dat daarna geevalueerd zal worden.

26-05-2006 : opnieuw succesvolle beklimmingen van Island Peak, Mera Peak en Lobuche East
Onze berggidsen hebben opnieuw een succesvol voorseizoen achter de rug met diverse succesvolle beklimmingen. Een japans team heeft zowel de Island Peak als de Mera Peak beklommen en hebben daarbij de Amphu Lapsa in omgekeerde richting overgestoken. Een niet simpele onderneming...Een engels team heeft dan de Lobuche East beklommen alsook een spaans team uit Barcelona.

21-04-2006 : Koning treedt af !
Op vrijdag, heeft Koning Gyanendra het volk toegesproken op de nationale televisie en volgens artikel 35 van de Nepalese grondwet de macht overgedragen aan het volk ! Hij voegde er aan toe dat de alliantie uit 7 partijen zo snel mogelijk een consensus moesten overeenkomen over het aanstellen van een nieuwe Eerste Minister. Koning Gyanendra vertelde verder dat de huidige regering met de huidige ministers aan de macht zouden blijven tot de volgende regering klaar zou zijn. Meer informatie volgt spoedig !

Onophoudelijke demonstraties elke dag en geen aanvoer meer van verse producten of brandstof. Na bericht uit Nepal blijkt dat er ook dagelijks mensen opgepakt worden. Laat ons hopen dat de internationale gemeenschap snel ingrijpt of dat de koning inziet dat de situatie onhoudbaar is...

20-03-2006 : Spaans team trekt rond de Manaslu en eindigt met de beklimming van de Chulu Far East
Een Spaanse team uit Barcelona heeft de trek rond de Manaslu beëindigt en heeft daarna geprobeerd de Chulu Far East te beklimmen. Problemen bij 2 van de teamleden heeft er voor gezorgd dat ze de beklimming afgebroken hebben en iedereen is veilig teruggekeerd naar Manang voor een paar dagen rust. De verkiezingen zijn zonder grote problemen verlopen in Nepal. Deels omdat er een algemene staking was tegen de verkiezingen en anderzijds omdat er toch geen kandidaten waren om op te stemmen.

24-11-2005 : Spaans team vast in slecht weer...
Het Spaanse team onder leiding van Lila Bahadur, dat op weg was naar de Chulu East, is onverijld teruggekeerd. Het weer in het high camp was bijzonder slecht en de kans op een toppoging was nihil. Himalayan Leaders (P) Ltd heeft er dan voor gezorgd dat de groep zijn tickets in Jomosom kon omwisselen en heeft daar bovenop een 4-dagen trip in het Chitwan National Parc als alternatief aangeboden, zonder meerprijs !

13-11-2005 : Keshav Pandey voorzitter Kathmandu Horizon LIONS CLUB
Onze eigen Keshav Pandey is voorzitter van de Kathmandu Horizon Lions Club. Zoals iedereen weet staat het sociale aspect centraal bij de Lions Club en daarom zijn we extra fier op het feit dat Keshav een aantal nieuwe projecten heeft georganiseerd. Een link naar de website.

30-10-2005 : Spaans team op weg naar Chulu East en Chulu Far East
Onder leiding van Lila Bahadur is een zeskoppig Spaans team op weg naar de Chulu East, een zelden beklommen berg. Het is namelijk de Chulu Far East die door 95% van alle team wordt beklommen. De route gaat via de oostelijke kant van de Annapurna Circuit en vanuit Manang zal dan de expeditie starten. Met goede weersomstandigheden wordt de toppoging ondernomen op 20 november 2005.

15-10-2005 : Nieuwe trekkingroute rond de Manaslu
Een Spaanse trekkinggroep is onder leiding van Bishnu Paudel een nieuwe route aan het uitzetten rond de Manaslu. Bedoeling is een groter deel van de bevolking via sustainable tourism te laten meegenieten van de toeristische inkomsten.

15-10-2005 : Succesvolle beklimming Chulu Far East
Het Belgisch-Zwitsers team heeft de top van de Chulu Far East succesvol beklommen. Tegelijkertijd werd er gezocht naar een nieuwe route voor het beklimmen van de Chulu East in 2006 ter voorbereiding van de beklimming van de Tilicho Peak (7000'er). Foto's zijn te bezichtigen op meer....

11-10-2005 : Nieuwe verkiezingen voor NATTA
De Nepalese Association of Tour & Travel Agents heeft zijn nieuwe actieve leden gekozen uit een select gezelschap van ervaren managers uit de toeristische industrie. De Natta zorgt voor begeleiding en sturing maar ook voor controle op de werking van de Nepalese Touroperators. De voorverkiezing vond plaats in het Radisson Hotel te Kathmandu en bracht voor de leiding van Himalayan Leaders diverse interessante gesprekken met zich mee, wat leidde tot een interview met de nationale pers.

03-09-2005 : Wapenstilstand in Nepal !
The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has declared three-month long unilateral cease-fire with immediate effect from September 3, 2005. According to Kantipur Online, issuing a press statement today, the chairman of The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), Prachanda said that the unilateral truce was declared with view of people's aspiration for peace and democracy. The travel and tourism industry with this announcement has expressed their happiness and wished for long-lasting peace in the country.

01-09-2005 : Zwitsers-Belgisch team beklimt Chulu East en Chulu Far East met Himalayan Leaders...
Een team bestaande uit Zwitsers en Belgen zal onder de deskundige leiding van berggidsen van Himalayan Leaders de Chulu East (6584m) en de Chulu Far East (6091m)beklimmen. Beide bergen bevinden zich in het Annapurna Massief en worden vanuit Manang beklommen. Een eerste basiskamp wordt op 4700m opgebouwd waarna nog een hoogtekamp volgt op 5300m. Voor de Chulu East wordt een apart hoogtekamp ingericht. Meer hierover op 12 oktober als het team terug in Kathmandu arriveert.

21-08-2005 : Directe busdienst Kathmandu-Lhasa...
Sajha Yatayat is set to resume Kathmandu-Lhasa direct passenger bus service from August 23. According to Shambhu KC, Traffic chief at Sajha Yatayat, the Lhasa-based agency would also manage travel permits for passengers traveling to Tibet from Nepal.
The direct bus service that kicked off on May 1 this year remains halted since May 23 owing to a number of problems including visa to Nepali travelers.
On behalf of Sajha Yatayat, Sunshine Travels has been appointed as visa processing agency. Besides one-way bus fare of US$ 70 per passenger, an additional $10 will be rated as service charge for visa processing and permit issuance while foreign travelers have to pay an additional $50, which will include lodging cost for three nights, KC informed. Nepal and China signed an agreement on October 29 last year to operate the direct passenger bus service between Kathmandu and Lhasa, Tibet.

The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) has decided to provide a fifty percent discount in the royalty charge to the mountaineering teams seeking permission to scale Mt. Manaslu (8163m) and Mt. Lhotse (8516m). According to MoCTCA, the slashed rates will come into effect from March 1 to June 30, 2006. The decision has been taken under a policy of observing a golden jubilee of the first ascent of mountains above 8,000 meters, the ministry said adding, the concession will be applicable to the royalty charge on the basis of numbers of mountaineers in an expedition team. During that period the royalty fee for seven members expedition team will be US $ 5000 (Five thousand),it is stated in a statement issued by MoCTCA.

31-05-2005 : Beklimming Everest door eerste niet-sherpa vrouw
Sixteen more mountaineers scaled Mount Everest on Monday with the total reaching 46, officials said. Expedition teams from six different countries including Nepal scaled the world’s highest summit.

According to officials at the Tourism Ministry, expedition teams from six different countries including a Nepali expedition scaled the mountain peak.

Moni Mulepati, the first non-Sherpa Nepali woman, team leader of the Rotary Centennial Everest Expedition 2005 - scaled the Mount Everest yesterday. There were three members in the expedition. Of the Monday’s successful mountaineers, 26 were Nepalis. Except Mulepati- the only Nepali female to scale the mountain- remaining 25 were the Sherpas. Sherpas are regarded the best mountain climbers in the world, and assist foreign expedition teams in climbing mountains.

Yesterday’s Everest conquerors were seven people including a woman from the United States, three males from South Korea, six males and two females from Iran, and one male each from Mexico and Canada, reports said.
It has been 52 years since man conquered the world’s tallest peak. On May 29, 1953, mountaineers- Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary conquered the 8,848 tall peak. In the 52 years of mountaineering history, over 1400 mountaineers have summited the world’s highest peak.
Nepal is regarded one of the best destinations of adventure tourism and mountaineering in the world and has 8 of the 14 world’s tallest peaks.

18-05-2005 : Himalayan Leaders
Een groep nederlanders vertrekt voor een eerste introductie van de Himalaya's en gaat voor een 5daagse trip naar Poon Hill Trek. Daarna gaan ze naar de heilige berg Mt Kailash voor 14 dagen. Bij terugkomst vliegen ze naar Lhasa voor 8 dagen voor een cultureel bezoek. Voor een bezoek aan Tibet is dit een interessante periode omdat het weer droog en warm is.

17-05-2005 : Himalayan Leaders
4 canadezen vertrekken vandaag richting Everest Trek voor een trekking van 25 dagen. Zij starten vanuit Jiri (Himalayan Leaders heeft voor hen een helicopter gecharterd van Kathmandu naar Jiri) en zullen eerst Gokyo aandoen. Daarna steken ze de Cho La over om Kala Pattar en Everest Base Camp te bezoeken.
Bij terugkomst zullen ze een culturele tour doen in Kathmandu en daarna uitrusten in het Unique wild resort te Chitwan National Parc.

15-05-2005 : Korean team climbed Mt. Dhaulagiri
One member and three high altitude Sherpas of 2005 Korean Dhaulagiri Peak Expedition Team successfully climbed Mt. Dhaulagiri, 8167 meter at 5:00pm on May 4, 2005, according to a press release received from the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation today. The member of the team who successfully climbed is Mr. Im Bok Choi, 20 yrs from Korea and other Sherpas from Nepal who scaled are Mr. Dowa Sherpa, 45 yrs, Mr. Serap Jongbu Sherpa, 35 yrs and Mr. Pema Tshiring Sherpa, 35 yrs. The 8 members 2005 Korea Dhaulagiri Peak Expedition Team led by Mr. Jae Hong Ahn from Korean was given permission to climb Mt. Dhaulagiri I from North East Ridge on March 27, 2005 for a period of 75 days. The handling agency of the Expedition Team is Ne-Ko Treks and Expedition P Ltd, Kathmandu, Nepal.

10-05-2005 : Kathmandu-Lhasa bus service to resume
The Kathmandu-Lhasa bus service will resume from Tuesday (May 16, 2005). The bus service was disrupted after the Chinese side stopped issuing visa to travellers.
According to Mukund Raj Satyal, chief executive of Sajha Yatayat, a bus will depart for Lhasa on Tuesday.
The bus service between Kathmandu and Lhasa had begun from May 1. The operation of bus on this sector is expected to help promote tourism and trade between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of China.
